Red & White Sangria
Summer events have always involved sangria in my family. We love the stuff! The biggest challenge was getting my father and aunt to come up with SOME kind of recipe for these! My Dad makes a killer red sangria. My Aunt Mary, his little sister, makes the white version. And neither of them have ANY idea how much of anything ACTUALLY goes into the mix! As my aunt says “it’s the giambotto of alcohol, just use whatever’s in the house!” Which is exactly what we do. But since I provide recipes on this site, I did put together some measurements for you guys! That being said, you know what’s coming next…make it your own! Don’t want to use brandy? That’s fine, pick another sweet liquor to add. Can’t find the right flavor of soda? All good, find something that sounds like it would compliment the flavors well. Keep adding - and tasting - until it’s just right! And yes, whoever makes the sangria is usually drunk by the time it’s ready from all the tasting!
For the wine, again, use whatever you like. More importantly, don’t use a wine you know you don’t like because you think you’re dressing it up! You probably won’t like your sangria either! Drier wines will need to be sweetened more, a lighter, sweeter wine won’t need too much added to it. Typically the white sangria has a sweeter flavor than the red, but again, it’s all up to you!
As a Health Coach, and as a general life rule, I don’t drink soda. The stuff is literal garbage. I STRONGLY encourage you to look for and use a natural or “Italian style” soda or sparkling beverage. This way you’re not loading yourself and your guests up with sugar and chemicals. I get it, we’re not exactly making health food here BUT, I do think we can always do little things to make improvements across the board, and those things add up! As always - quality ingredients make for quality results!
Then there’s that perfectly boozy fruit at the end! We actually save any leftover pieces and eat them after dinner the day AFTER a party…they’re a cocktail all on their own! But you want to use seasonal fruits. Since these are Summer sangria’s, I like fresh berries and orange slices in the red. Jersey fresh peaches, some strawberries and orange slices in the white. In the Fall I would probably swap the berries for apple slices and maybe some red or green grapes!
Personally, my favorite is the white wine version, but I enjoy both! Whatever you add to your mix, I hope you enjoy it in good health and surrounded by love! Gives these a try and let me know what you think! I’d love to know what you add to yours!
Salute!
